In today’s fast-paced world, we often get caught up in chasing the things that seem to bring us happiness—material wealth, career success, and physical comfort. We measure our worth by what we own or how we’re perceived. But what if we’re missing the bigger picture? The parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man, found in Luke 16:19-31, offers us a powerful reminder of where our true focus should be. It’s a story that not only touches on eternity but also challenges us to rethink how we live our lives today.
The Story of Lazarus and the Rich Man
In this parable, Jesus contrasts the lives of two men. The rich man lives in luxury, indulging in fine foods and wearing expensive clothing. He’s comfortable, content, and perhaps unaware of the suffering around him. Then, there’s Lazarus, a poor man covered in sores who lies at the rich man’s gate, longing for just the crumbs that fall from his table. Despite his hardship, Lazarus’s suffering is largely ignored.
When both men die, the tables are turned. Lazarus is comforted in heaven, while the rich man, now in torment, finds himself separated by a vast chasm from the comfort Lazarus enjoys. The rich man begs Abraham for a drop of water to cool his tongue, but Abraham reminds him that the choices he made on earth have led to this irreversible divide. He had received his good things in life, while Lazarus had endured suffering—but now, their positions are reversed forever.
What Does This Story Teach Us?
At first glance, this may seem like a story about wealth and poverty, but it’s much deeper than that. Jesus uses this parable to highlight a key truth about life on earth: everything here is temporary. Our wealth, our health, even our achievements—none of it lasts forever. What truly matters, according to Jesus, is our eternal soul and the choices we make that reflect God’s love and generosity.
The rich man’s problem wasn’t just that he had wealth—it was that he had no compassion for others, no awareness of the suffering around him. He was so focused on his material world that he couldn’t see the needs of Lazarus, who lay at his gate. And that lack of generosity, that focus on the temporary things of life, led to his downfall.
Mental Health and the Focus on Eternity
The rich man’s story is also a cautionary tale for our mental health. When we constantly focus on material gain or status, it can weigh heavily on our minds. Stress, anxiety, comparison, and fear of losing what we’ve gained all stem from the pressure of living in a world that values the temporary. The rich man’s obsession with his wealth may have brought him comfort for a time, but it never provided lasting peace. And when he was faced with eternity, his material wealth could not save him.
On the other hand, Lazarus, despite his suffering, had a focus on the eternal. His life on earth was difficult, but he was comforted in heaven because he remained faithful, humble, and trusting in God’s ultimate justice and love. Shifting our focus from the temporary to the eternal can help relieve the stress and anxiety that often comes with chasing the wrong things. By focusing on love, kindness, and generosity, we start to experience a peace that doesn’t depend on what we own or how successful we are.
Matthew 16:26: A Reminder for Us All
In Matthew 16:26, Jesus asks,
"What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?"
This question challenges us to rethink what we value. In a world that constantly encourages us to accumulate more—whether it's wealth, fame, or power—Jesus invites us to consider the eternal impact of our choices. What is the point of gaining everything we desire in this world if we lose what truly matters: our soul, our peace, and our purpose?
Living with Eternity in Mind
The story of Lazarus and the Rich Man isn’t just about what happens after we die—it’s about how we live today. It’s a call to be generous, to care for those in need, and to focus on what truly lasts. When we make eternal values a priority, we not only enrich our own lives but also bring peace and hope to others.
So, take a moment today to reflect on where your focus lies. Are you chasing the temporary, or are you investing in what will last forever? By shifting your perspective to eternal things, you can find peace, joy, and purpose that no material success can provide.
