It Is Finished: Finding True Freedom This Holiday Season
In a world full of burdens and unrelenting pressures, there is one truth that brings freedom like no other: "It is finished." These powerful words, spoken by Jesus on the cross (John 19:30), hold eternal significance. They remind us that the debt of sin has been paid in full. But what does this mean for us today, especially during the holiday season?
The Meaning of "It Is Finished"
The phrase "It is finished" comes from the Greek word Tetelestai, meaning "paid in full." It was a term used in ancient transactions to indicate that a debt had been completely settled. When Jesus declared this from the cross, He was proclaiming that His mission on earth—to redeem mankind—was accomplished. The price for sin had been paid once and for all.
This truth is life-changing, particularly during the Christmas season, when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. His coming into the world was not just about a miraculous birth but about a divine mission—to bring salvation, redemption, and eternal hope.
Redemption and Forgiveness Through Christ
Colossians 1:14 tells us, "In whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." Through Jesus, we experience complete forgiveness – not partial, not conditional, but total and absolute. Many people live weighed down by regret and past mistakes. The good news is that Jesus' sacrifice broke those chains. When He declared, "It is finished," He secured our freedom.
Romans 8:1 echoes this, saying, "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." No matter what you've done or where you've been, the gift of grace is available to you today. Jesus bore the punishment so that we could walk free, redeemed, and restored.
This holiday season, instead of carrying the burdens of the past, let’s embrace the gift of forgiveness. Jesus did not come to condemn us but to save us (John 3:17). This is a time for renewal, a fresh start, and stepping into the fullness of God’s grace.
Healing for Mind, Body, and Spirit
Isaiah 53:5 beautifully reminds us, "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed." The healing Jesus provides extends beyond the spiritual realm. It touches our mental, emotional, and physical health as well.
The holiday season, while joyful, can also bring stress, anxiety, and even sadness. Many struggle with loneliness, family conflicts, or financial pressures. But Jesus came to bring peace to our weary souls.
Matthew 11:28 offers an invitation from Jesus: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." True healing comes when we release our struggles and trust in His finished work. If you’re carrying anxiety, depression, or physical ailments, know that Jesus’ sacrifice covers all areas of your life.
This Christmas, take a moment to rest in His presence. Let go of your worries and allow God’s healing power to restore you.
No Other Name: The Only Path to Salvation
Acts 4:12 declares, "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved." Jesus is the only way to salvation and eternal life. His sacrifice is not one option among many – it is the only way to true freedom and lasting peace.
The world offers temporary solutions—self-help books, meditation, material success—but none of these can truly save or satisfy the soul. Only Jesus can.
During Christmas, we often focus on gifts, decorations, and festivities. But the greatest gift ever given is salvation through Jesus Christ. He came not to give us temporary happiness but eternal joy. Let’s shift our focus from material things to the eternal promise of salvation.
Hope in the Second Coming of Christ
While we celebrate the birth of Christ, we must also look forward to His glorious return. The promise of Jesus' second coming is a source of hope and encouragement for all believers. Revelation 22:12 says, "Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done."
Jesus' return will bring ultimate justice, restoration, and fulfillment of God’s promises. This world, with all its trials and suffering, is not our final home. As we celebrate Christmas, let us also prepare our hearts for His return, living in righteousness and eagerly awaiting the day when He will reign forever.
Titus 2:13 reminds us to wait for "the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ." Just as the prophets foretold His first coming, we can be certain that He will come again. Let this truth fill our hearts with joy, anticipation, and unwavering faith.
Living in the Freedom of Christ
The question remains – are you living like your sins are truly forgiven? Are you carrying burdens that Jesus already bore on the cross?
So many Christians continue to live in guilt and fear, despite being saved by grace. But grace is not about earning God’s love—it’s about accepting the love He has already freely given.
John 8:36 says, "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."
This Christmas, take a moment to reflect:
- Are you still living in shame and condemnation?
- Do you believe in God’s complete forgiveness?
- Have you fully surrendered your burdens to Jesus?
If not, today is the day to embrace true freedom. Say the words "It is finished" over your past mistakes, failures, and regrets. Walk in the victory that Christ has won for you!

Final Thoughts
