The American Psychological Association defines depression as a negative state ranging from unhappiness and discontent to an extreme feeling of sadness, pessimism, and despondency that interferes with daily life.
Depression is a common mental health condition affecting approximately 4% of the global population including 5.2% of adults—according to the World Health Organization. In the Philippines, roughly 4.5% of the total population (around 4.8 million people) suffers from depression and anxiety. In the United States, approximately 8.3% of all American adults (over 21 million people) experience a major depressive episode annually.
Behind these staggering numbers are real human stories—including my own. Personally experiencing depression, there are times I feel completely alone, exhausted, and on the verge of losing hope to continue this journey called life. But through my personal relationship with Jesus—the Greatest Healer of all time—I find the strength to get through day by day.
Here are my 7 personal favorite Bible verses to bring hope, peace, and comfort in the battle against depression:
1. "The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not over come it"- John 1:5
This line is part of a fantastic chapter written by John the Beloved (the Apostle John) showing that darkness will never overcome God's light. As Jesus mentioned in John 8:12, He is the Light of the World.
The world desperately needs the light of Jesus—a light full of hope, peace, and truth. We live in a broken and chaotic world where people are constantly searching for truth, while the enemy (Satan)—the Father of Lies—has one main strategy: to make the bad look good and the good look bad. As followers of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, we have to stay focused on Him. He is our light at the end of the tunnel.
I accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior when I was 31 years old. Accepting Jesus might mean different things to different people, but for me, it means:
Putting God first (Matthew 6:33)
Praying "Thy will be done, not mine" (Matthew 6:10)
Leaning not on my own understanding (Proverbs 3:5)
Being a Christian no longer means just going to church on Sundays; it means having a constant, personal relationship with Jesus—the Greatest Healer of All Time
From 2020 to 2026, life has been a rollercoaster airplane ride
Looking back, I know that Jesus has been behind every single one of these events
2. "The Lord is close to the Broken Hearted and saves those who are crushed in the spirit" Psalm 34:18
King David wrote this verse before he was crowned King of Israel, while fleeing for his life from King Saul, who was filled with pride. It was written during what was considered the lowest point of his life—a moment when he even had to pretend to be insane before King Achish of the Philistines just to spare his own life.
This verse is widely shared today because it reveals a God who cares deeply for the brokenhearted and saves those who feel crushed in spirit. Jesus, the Greatest Healer of All Time
I recently got my heart broken
Even through the pain, I have always known that the hand of God is behind everything happening in my life
3. "Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest" - Matthew 11:28
This verse is widely known as the "Great Invitation." In this passage, Jesus was calling out to people who were utterly exhausted—oppressed under the harsh Roman regime while simultaneously burdened by the strict religious rules imposed by the Pharisees . Jesus extended a direct invitation, revealing that He Himself is the true rest and comfort their souls needed .
In today's fast-paced world, we still carry heavy baggage—sometimes far too much for one person to bear . Because we can only hold so much as human beings, many of us turn to temporary escapes like smoking, alcohol, or drugs just to ease the pain of living in a broken world . But Jesus offers a simpler, deeper invitation: to come to Him and receive a peace that this world can never provide .
Having been in this world for 37 years, I can honestly say that many days it feels like I am barely walking on my own . Instead, it feels as though Jesus is carrying me, just like in the poem "Footprints in the Sand." Life is not easy; it is a battlefield out there . I accepted Jesus' invitation when I truly surrendered my life to Him almost six years ago .
To be completely honest, there are still moments when I struggle to feel His presence and feel like I can't take it anymore . But this verse serves as a constant reminder that He is carrying me every step of the way—fulfilling His promise that He will never leave us nor forsake us .

4. "Do not be afraid, for I am with you; do not be anxious: I am your God. I will strengthen you , I will help you." - Isaiah 41:10
The Prophet Isaiah wrote these words to the Kingdom of Judah during a time of impending oppression by the Babylonian Empire—the superpower of that era . Surrounded by pagan culture, the people of Israel were losing sight of their covenant with the one true God . Isaiah wrote to remind them not to be afraid, for the living God—revealed to us in Jesus Christ—would always be with them .
Today, we all know how chaotic this world feels . With wars, rumors of wars, rising fuel and living costs, and family struggles, anxiety is at an all-time high . Yet, we have a divine Helper we can truly depend on: the King of the Universe, the Greatest Healer of All Time—Jesus Christ of Nazareth .
As I write this part of the blog, I just returned from the funeral of my aunt, a woman who achieved so much in her lifetime . Sitting through the funeral mass and final rites, I realized something profound . Up until that moment, I had been juggling so many overwhelming problems in my head, feeling lost on what to do . But looking at my late aunt, it struck me: she no longer has any earthly problems . No more bills to pay, no more stress . No matter how much we achieve in life, we will all eventually end up in the grave .
Reflecting on this verse, I asked myself: Why am I worrying so much about the burdens of this life? The living God, the Lord Jesus Christ, is ready to strengthen me, help me, and uphold me in the palm of His hand .
5. "Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God" - Psalm 42:11
This part of the Psalms was written by the Sons of Korah from the tribe of Levi—a lineage of priests and musicians appointed by King David to lead worship and guard the temple. The author wrote this during a time of isolation and exile, amidst the rebellion of King David's son Absalom, who sought to seize the throne from his father and take over Jerusalem.
"Downcast" is defined as being depressed, discouraged, or without hope. In this modern day, we face pressures at an all-time high as we try to balance life, work, career, and so much more. I like how this verse starts when the author asks himself: Why are you downcast? And why so disturbed within? As believers in Christ, we often ask and remind ourselves: Why am I feeling this way? I pray, I read my Bible, I listen to worship songs, I attend Mass—yet there is one element that is sometimes lacking: true surrender to trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
To ultimately put your trust and hope in the Lord Jesus—the Alpha and the Omega—and not on man. It is the nature of man to fail, but the God you serve will not. It means choosing to praise Him in all seasons of life, fulfilling the command to "give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
I personally love this verse because it mirrors the reality of my life right now, and I need to constantly remind myself of it. Even after surrendering my life to the Lord Jesus and accepting Him as my personal Lord and Savior, I still ask: Why do I feel this way? It is simply part of being human. That is why I need the Lord Jesus, who I consider, without a shadow of a doubt, the Greatest Healer of All Time. God's hope is no match for the fleeting hope this world gives; it never ends. While we naturally put our trust in people, we shouldn't do so completely—don't be surprised when they fail you, as it is part of human frailty, and I choose not to take it personally.
Likewise, I always remind people to trust in the Lord, not me. The Lord has given me a mission, utilizing the talents and gifts He has given me, to bring His people closer to Him.
6. "My Grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" - 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)
The Apostle Paul wrote this verse to the church in Corinth, which was heavily influenced by Greco-Roman culture. That culture placed the utmost value on earthly riches, social status, and external credibility rather than magnifying Christ. They often criticized Paul for his unimpressive appearance, his sufferings, and his style of leadership.
Today, we are all guilty of this same mindset. We often judge people by their physical appearance, their wealth, their bank accounts, or how many cars they drive, rather than who they truly are inside. This world tends to make fun of people's weaknesses instead of helping them. But this verse shows that God, the Creator of the universe, is strong right where we are weak. His grace—the Greek word charis, which refers to a gift or unmerited favor given to another—means that our human weakness is sustained and made complete by God's grace. Whatever we are going through right now cannot even begin to compare to the unfailing love of the King of the Universe, the true living God, Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
I personally love this verse so much that I included it in my first book, Jesus: The Greatest Healer of All Time, in a chapter discussing the difficult question: What happens when physical healing doesn't come? Right before this verse, the Apostle Paul talked about his "thorn in the flesh." Three times, he begged the Lord to remove it, and the Lord answered him: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."
What a beautiful response from the God that I serve! I constantly meditate on this verse, connecting it to the calling we have to carry our cross and follow Christ every day. I personally suffer from seasonal allergic rhinitis. There is no permanent cure for this illness; I can take medicine to manage the symptoms and avoid my triggers, but it remains a chronic immune system reaction. Just like the Apostle Paul, this is my own "thorn." I have begged the Lord to take it away from me so that I can continue my work to serve Him and bring people closer to Him without interruption. Yet, this verse hits me hard every single time: His grace is always sufficient.
7. "Cast your anxiety on him because he cares for you" - 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)
Written by the Apostle Peter in Rome, this was addressed to early Christian believers who faced severe persecution and fear under the Roman Empire. Peter reminded them to cast their anxiety on Him—meaning Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Peter, formerly Simon, was a simple fisherman in Galilee; he instructs us to cast all our anxiety and fear onto the Lord because He truly cares for us.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), anxiety has been at an all-time high, dramatically increasing by 25% since the COVID-19 pandemic, and it continues to rise at an alarming rate every day. This verse from Peter is a constant reminder that there is someone who cares for you, and He is bigger than any mental health issue you are facing right now. His name is Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom I consider the Greatest Healer of All Time.
The anxiety I experienced during COVID-19 was undeniably the highest I have ever felt in my entire life. While I had experienced stress prior to that, this particular period was at its worst. I was in law school, riding the momentum to finally become a lawyer, when this once-in-a-lifetime event happened—everything just stopped, and the world went into complete isolation.
There were so many negative things going through my head, like "When will this end?" or "What will I do next?" Yet, this was the exact moment I made the best decision of my life: to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior. To be honest, I was already a regular churchgoer every Sunday, but there was always something missing. That missing piece was having a deep, personal connection with the Creator of the universe, the true living God, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. It was through that personal relationship, empowered by the Holy Spirit, that I was used as an instrument to publish my first book, Jesus: The Greatest Healer of All Time.
This book is not just any other book; it is my personal testimony of continuous healing from the Greatest Healer of all time.
Conclusion — There Is Still Hope!
In our daily battle against depression, we sometimes ask: Is there hope? The greatest miracle ever performed by the King of the Universe, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, was when He rose from the dead—over 500 people saw and spoke with Him. My trust is in Him because He conquered the grave. I do not think there is a single living person on planet Earth who will not experience depression at some point in their lives. Because of this, it is crucial that we do not let it consume us, but instead find the strength to keep going through Jesus: The Greatest Healer of All Time.
I have been through the worst depressions of my life and have almost felt like giving up. But my personal belief and faith remain in the only living God, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. When I am weak, He is strong—He is the anchor I hold onto every single day. Just like the bleeding woman in the Bible who believed that touching just the fringe of His garment could heal her, I am holding onto that same thread every day. He is the source of the strength I need to finish the race, keep the faith, and fight the good fight, just as the Apostle Paul said.
Always remember: While faith and Scripture provide our ultimate spiritual anchor, it is also okay and necessary to lean on professional support, trusted counselors, and community when the weight gets too heavy. Healing often happens through a combination of prayer, community, and care.
Always keep in mind that nothing in this world is permanent; everything is temporary, and so is the depression you are experiencing. Look toward the light and keep holding onto our true strength—the One who conquered the grave, Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
